03 Nights in Zurich.
The city of Zurich, a global center for banking and finance, lies at the north end of Lake Zurich in northern Switzerland. The picturesque lanes of the central Altstadt (Old Town), on either side of the Limmat River, reflect its pre-medieval history. Waterfront promenades like the Limmatquai follow the river toward the 17th-century Rathaus (town hall).
Augustinergasse is a colorful old-world street, known for the carved windows of former merchants’ houses. Shopping Boulevard Bahnhofstrasse is lined with high-end fashion stores and banks. Niederdorf is a popular nightlife area. The 9th-century Fraumünster church houses Marc Chagall's 1970s stained-glass windows, and the Grossmünster’s tower has views of the city, lake, and the Alps. The Landes museum traces Swiss culture over thousands of years. Also, the Cabaret Voltaire, a cafe/bar that's still in operation, was the 1916 birthplace of the Dada art movement. Work by modern artists like Alberto Giacometti is on display at the Kunsthaus museum.
Peak travel season is May–Nov. Widely attended events are the Zurich Festival, a month-long series of art, music and theater performances sponsored by the city's cultural institutions; the outdoor dance party known as the Street Parade (Aug); and Weltklasse Zurich (Aug–Sep), a prestigious track and field event.
Paris, France's capital, is a major European city and a global center for art, fashion, gastronomy, and culture. Its 19th-century cityscape is crisscrossed by wide boulevards and the River Seine. Beyond such landmarks like the Eiffel Tower and the 12th-century, Gothic Notre-Dame cathedral, the city is known for its cafe culture and designer boutiques along the Rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré.
The famed Louvre museum houses da Vinci’s “Mona Lisa.” The Musée d’Orsay has Impressionist works by Monet, Degas, and Renoir. On the Seine’s Right Bank, the Montmartre neighborhood is home to Sacré-Coeur Basilica and sweeping hilltop views. In the Marais, nightclubs sit among restored 17th-century mansions. On the Left Bank are the Latin Quarter, bustling with Sorbonne scholars, and the historically bohemian Saint-Germain-des-Prés. The city’s open-air cafes are an institution for casual eating and people-watching. Fine-dining restaurants, bistros, markets, and patisseries reflect other aspects of France's famed culinary heritage.
Paris is a year-round destination but a common time to visit is summer (May–Jul), when the weather is warmest. Later in June, the streets come alive for the Fête de la Musique. Fête Nationale (Bastille Day) takes place on Jul 13–14. However, in August many shops and restaurants close, when locals head off for holiday. Many museums offer free entry during Journées du Patrimoine (Sep). Paris is also busy during Fashion Week (Mar/Sep) and the Mondial de L’Automobile show (Oct). Winters can be cold and damp, even snowy.
